Brasília is Brazil’s federal capital and it is located in the country’s Midwestern region. It was conceived by President Juscelino Kubitschek, designed by architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on April 21, 1960.

The city is the headquarters of the principal bodies of Brazil’s executive, legislative and judicial powers, and hosts 124 foreign embassies. It is in Brasilia where the president lives and works, where the Congress, the Senate and the Supreme Court are.

The urban design of Brazil’s federal capital is known as Pilot Plan (Plano Piloto), which is divided into numbered blocks as well as sectors for pre -determined activities, as the Hotels, Banking, Entertainment, Self-Governing Bodies and Embassies Sectors (Setor Hoteleiro, Bancário, de Diversões, de Autarquias e de Embaixadas).

Since 1987, Brasilia joined UNESCO’s World Heritage Site’s list, being recognized for its architectural and urban set.

Due to its political importance and its strategic location, the city gathers migrants from all parts of Brazil, thus forming a population of over 2.5 million inhabitants with diverse and plural identity.
